Moving During COVID-19

As the world slows down, more people self-isolate to prevent the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19. It is important that all non-essential movement is delayed. Therefore, consider all of your options before packing your bags. But, if you do have to move, there are a few things you should pay special attention to in order to ensure your safety and hygiene.

Before anything else, check to see whether the legislation in the state or city you are moving to allows relocation at the moment of the move. It’s paramount that you keep up to date on all developments. Additionally, if you have any questions or you’re unsure about any aspect of your upcoming move, contact health experts and your local authorities for the best practices. Below are some general tips and guidelines, but always check the local orders first.

Discuss Appropriate Procedures with the Moving Company

First, confirm that the moving services you need are currently operating in your area. If you’re moving to a big city like Miami or Chicago, that shouldn’t be a problem. Then, discuss the precautions they have in place and their procedures to make sure they respect current health and security expectations. For instance, address issues such as whether there is a need to sign an actual paper contract or if you can complete all of the required paperwork online.

Furthermore, ask the movers to wear gloves and face masks, and provide them with hand sanitizer or soap and water at the entrance of the apartment. Also, find out whether the company disinfects its trucks between moves and if there are any requirements you should comply with.

Deep Clean Both Locations & Your Belongings

Research cleaning services to determine whether they are able to provide assistance at this time. Either way, deep clean both your previous home and your new rental apartment to eliminate any germs that might be living on those surfaces. Moreover, when your movers arrive at the new location, direct them to put all of your stuff into a garage, then disinfect it before you move into your new home.

Research Your New Area

Before you move, research your neighborhood and form an idea of where the essential services are. For example, look for the closest grocery store, pharmacy, healthcare provider, and hospital. Meanwhile, if you’re moving to a different state, educate yourself on the regulations in place in that area. Similarly, if there are other locations you need to familiarize yourself with — such as a new workplace if you’re relocating for work — research those, as well, and find the safest way to reach them. Remember, it’s best to isolate as much as possible right now.

Set Up Your New Home Ahead of Time

Many services are being delayed. Many new procedures and guidelines are in place now. With that in mind, set up your internet service ahead of time so you’ll be connected to the world as soon as you move in. It’s best to do this in advance because everything has moved online, so you might have to wait. Your new home will also come with an empty kitchen, so order groceries to stock up for a few days and, as a result, limit the number of times you have to go out. Don’t hoard, but do make sure you have all of the necessities.

If you have to move right now, you might feel anxiety from the uncertainty and even the feeling of guilt. But, don’t worry. Contact specialists to make sure you have everything covered. If you handle the move with care and observe all health and safety precautions, you should be safe. Take care and good luck!
